Larry Covalciuc
Artist’s Statement
I am my photographs.
While nature remains my most significant influence, the works of great artists, both photographers and painters, have also shaped my work. My time studying with various mentors has taught me technical skills which have enabled my ability to interpret what nature puts before me. Although my photographs are mainly black and white, occasionally color rules the moment.
Biography
Larry Covalciuc grew up in an artistic family in South Omaha, Nebraska. In his younger years, Larry helped with his father’s lithography business, making printing plates and negatives. Larry’s mother, Ann Covalciuc, was an oil painter focused on still life and landscapes. Ann’s work will soon be able to view and purchase here.
From a young age, Larry began making photographs using a darkroom in the family’s home basement, this skill provided an excellent foundation for digital post-processing. Years later, before majoring in engineering at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Larry attended numerous photography courses, processing and printing images made with a 4 x 5 Speed Graphic camera. Processing his own color transparencies and slides resulted in him building a darkroom in his then home, continuing to enhance his passion and dive deeper into photography. It was during this time that Larry decided to focus on black and white fine-art photography.
As the founder and owner of Custom Electronics in Omaha, Larry spent over 50 years providing custom home theatre services to local residents, all the while pursuing his passion for photography. Larry has studied with and had portfolio reviews with mentors including Howard Bond, Paul Caponigro, John Sexton, John Paul Caponigro, Jay Dusard, and Alan Ross.
Today, Larry’s primary focus is his photography; producing and selling prints, utilizing both his in-home dark room and digital skills, judging photography contests and lecturing about photographic techniques. When Larry is not exploring nature, traveling and taking photographs, he can be found cycling the roads of Iowa, Oregon, Colorado, and Maine with his wife of 59 years, Marylin, and baking apple pies for his grandson.
